Baby Yoda has taken over the internet for the past few months, with countless memes and gifs of the adorable Star Wars character being shared around the world.
And now, his real name has finally been revealed.
For the past year or so, the little green ball has been referred to as ‘The Child’ on toys and any merchandise, while most people have stuck with the more familiar ‘Baby Yoda’.
However, in the latest episode of The Mandalorian, fans of the hit spin-off were shocked to learn that the little ball of cuteness is, in fact, called ‘Grogu’.
During ‘Chapter 13: The Jedi’, we see Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu meet up with Jedi warrior Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), who had contacted Baby Yoda using ‘the force’.
And if it wasn’t enough to learn what his real name is, Tano also hinted at his very dark origin story.
According to the character, Grogu had grown up at the Jedi temple in Coruscant and had narrowly managed to escape the carnage that ensued during Star Wars: Revenge of The Sith.
Since the shock revelation, fans of the series have taken to social media to share their love, with some getting quite emotional in the process.
One adoring viewer said: “Baby Yoda’s name is Grogu?! And he has a tragic backstory?! (crying emoji)
“Grogu is hella cute. Baby Yoda is from the Jedi temple. WTF we get a whole backstory to Baby Joda,” another chimed in.
Considering his backstory, you would think that Grogu would have been able to contain his hunger when he decided to chow down on the eggs of an endangered species in a recent episode of series two.
But no, he face-planted into than you could say ‘Frog Lady’s crying now, cheers’.
The gusto with which the fictional character feasted on the fictional eggs really upset one or two people who felt it was not as funny as it was intended to be and, in fact, rather offensive – with many calling for him to be removed from the show.
How could they?
